India shuts unit at country’s largest nuclear power plant for maintenance

India’s largest nuclear reactor, Kudankulam Unit 1, has been shut down for scheduled maintenance, potentially increasing power prices in southern regions. The 65-day outage has prompted concerns from Kerala State Electricity Board about worsening peak-hour electricity shortages and driving up short-term power procurement costs. While Unit 2 operates normally, the shutdown highlights challenges in meeting power demand.
